Organic cotton is grown using methods that have a low impact on the environment. It is grown without pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers or any other chemicals, and that makes it hugely different, especially considering that cotton provides about half of all the world's fibre needs.
Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Here are some good reasons for you to go organic:
- Organic cotton wear is often associated with FAIR LABOR practices. This ensures that all workers are paid a fair wage for their work and not working in a sweatshop environment. Organic field workers are not exposed to toxic chemicals that endanger their health.
- Babies are more vulnerable to toxic agents that come in contact with their skin and respiratory system. Therefore organic cotton clothes are gentler on the skin and healthier for baby.
- Clothes made from organic cotton may be more costly than conventional cotton but it is the value and quality it provides that makes it all worthwhile. Its softness and quality is truly unmatched and is one of the top reasons why people prefer organic cotton for their delicate baby’s skin.
- The cotton that is grown in conventional ways is compromised and weakened by the chemicals used in growing, processing and dying of the cotton. These processes break the fibre down and create a weaker, inferior cotton garment as compared to the organic way. This explains why we get softer and stronger cotton using organic methods.
- Most manufacturers use vegetable dyes or dyes without heavy metal colours which makes them safer for babies too.
- Apart from organic cotton, other organic fibres are also derived from examples, bamboo, soy and hemp.
- Bamboo has become a popular sustainable fabric choice for companies wishing to transition into eco-friendly fashion. Bamboo grows fast and can be farmed without pesticides or chemical additives. It's also 100 percent biodegradable. To make bamboo fibres, the plant is pulped until it separates into thin threads that can be spun and woven into cloth.
- Bamboo makes excellent fabric for sportswear because of its natural antibacterial and moisture-wicking properties. Bamboo fabric is also noted for its silky feel.
So no worries when babies play with organic teething toys and place them in their mouths!
And you get the good feeling that you are giving your baby the best as well as protecting our earth as well!
